The busy month of May!

It has been a very busy month in Room 131!

Evening of Song
Our class performed beautifully at the Evening of Song.  Thank you to all who came out to support the class.

Mother´s Day
We hope you all enjoyed your Mother's Day gifts.  The class did a wonderful job and were very proud of their presents.

Math:
This month we did a lot of review of a variety of concepts.  Students went outside to construct various angles as well as created spinners for probability games.

Language:
We continue to work on perfecting Perfect Paragraphs!  Many students are still struggling with editing their work to be sure they have included the proper format, punctuation and spelling.

Science:
We have started our unit on Plants and Soil and last week the class created "seeds" and tested how they are dispersed.  We have started growing some plants in our class and were excited to see roots taking hold yesterday.  The students are also completing a plant project on Google slides. They have selected a plant of their choice and are describing how it looks, where it grows, special features, etc.  They are including maps and diagrams in their report.  You can see their progress and offer assistance by having them log into their Google Drive at home.

Bike Rodeo!

Heritage Village:
The permission forms for the Heritage Village trip on June 23rd went home today.  Please complete the forms and return with payment as soon as possible.

EQAO
We have just two days left to complete the EQAO testing.  The students have been working enthusiastically and I am very proud of the effort they have put into it (even though they know it does not affect their school grades!).  Our classroom has also never been so quiet!

Student Assessment Folders
In the next couple of days I will be sending home their yellow assessment folders.  This contains work that they have completed throughout the year.  Please look over it with your child.  They do not need to be returned.

Virtual Reality:
This month the class was able to test out a state-of-the-art virtual reality headset.  It was overwhelming to some as it is so realistic, but they greatly enjoyed it.

Bike Rodeo and Mother's Day

Bike Rodeo
On Monday, May 15, the Deep River Police Department is organizing a bike rodeo for our class.  Students will be learning about bicycle safety.  Students are welcome to bring their own bikes and helmets to use on the course.  Our class is participating at 2:15pm.

Mother's Day
Students have prepared a special Mother's Day gift this week.  They brought it home today, so please remind them to check their backpacks to be sure it arrived home safely.  Happy Mother's Day!

April

If has been a very busy month at MCS and in Room 131!

Arts Night
Arts night was a great success!  Thank you to all who came out to support the Arts at MCS.  We are so proud of the incredible art work our class has completed.

Evening of Song
On Monday, May 8th at 7:00pm our class will be singing at the Evening of Song.  They have worked all year for this performance and they sound wonderful.  We hope everyone can attend.  With such a small class, every voice matters!

Yearbook
I have been working on a K-12 Yearbook. It is coming together well and is now available for purchase online.  Every student is able to add two pages of their own photographs; making it a truly personable yearbook.  You can find out more by following the link below.

EQAO
At the end of May students will be writing the Grade 3 Provincial Assessment.  In order to have students feel comfortable and relaxed, we have started doing some test practice.  This involves sitting still and working quietly for longer than the class is used to in order to build stamina.  I will be sending home some of the sample activities we have completed as a class for you to review.

Science
We are just completing a unit on Forces before moving on to Plants and Soil.  The students have done lots of hands-on experiments to improve their understanding of the Laws of Motion.  Last week they worked in teams and as a whole class to build roller coasters.

Language:
We have been continuing to work on writing descriptive paragraphs and I am trying to have students take more time to edit their own work or have a peer edit with them.  Often when they take the time to re-read what they have written, they can discover simple errors in grammar and spelling.

In reading, students are working on adding more evidence from a text when responding to something they have read.  I am constantly reminding them to ¨back up¨ their thinking!

Math:
We have just completed units on Area and Time.  There are a couple of students that still struggle to tell time on an analog clock.  Please practice this at home on a regular basis.  We also have been working on passage of time. (i.e. if I left at 9:00am what time would I be home if I went for a 3 hour bike ride?).  This is tricky for many students.
