Swimming rescheduled
Our swim lesson was cancelled today as the pool had to be closed. Our class has been rescheduled to Thursday.
Balloon rockets
Last week the students investigated forces while constructing and "launching" balloon rockets. Local scientist, John Wills, lent his expertise to help the students better understand forces and the laws of motion. Retired teacher, Mrs. Thomas also helped with the experiment. They greatly enjoyed the activity and were very successful!
Snowshoeing
We had a wonderful afternoon snowshoeing last week. The students learned about the history of snowshoeing before heading outside to explore. We hunted for tracks and signs of wildlife outside. We can't wait for our next snowshoeing adventure!

Forest of Reading Program at the Deep River Public Library
The Forest of Reading® is Canada’s largest recreational reading program! This initiative of the Ontario Library Association (OLA) offers programs to encourage a love of reading. The Forest helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators. More than 250,000 readers participate annually.
The Deep River Public Library is running the program for readers from Junior Kindergarten through Grade Twelve. Each program has nominated titles chosen by committees of library professionals. Participants read a minimum of five out of the 10 nominated titles in their award category. In the spring, readers vote for their favourite nominated title and choose the winners of the award programs. This is one of the few programs in Canada where the award winners are chosen by the readers.
Register for free at the Circulation Desk during opening hours. Check out the Forest of Reading® display in the library or ask a staff member for more information! The 2017 Forest of Reading® program will conclude with a grand finale voting party at the library on Thursday, April 20th from 3:45-4:30pm. Cast your ballot and join in the party!

December Fun and the New Year
Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.
December was a busy month in Room 131 (see photos below)! The students baked, sewed, made stop-motion films, built and performed. It was a fun month and now we are back into the full swing of things.
In writing, we are focusing on paragraph writing and editing. In reading, we are working on demonstrating understanding of what we have read by backing up responses with details from the text. In math, we are wrapping up a unit in geometry and moving on to problem solving with addition and subtraction. In science, we are beginning a very hands-on unit about Forces.
