Patterning

To start the year off we have been working on a patterning math unit.  Students easily demonstrated their knowledge of repeating patterns, so we moved on to growing/shrinking patterns.  
They are exploring how both shape patterns and number patterns grow or shrink sequentially.  We are using the strategies of counting on or subtracting to find the gap between numbers (i.e. In the pattern 3,5,7 . . . there is a gap of 2). Knowing the gap helps determine the next numbers in the pattern.
