Today the primary students participated in the Terry Fox Run by running around the track. The students put in a lot of effort to support the cause. Some students ran 10 laps!

Patterning
To start the year off we have been working on a patterning math unit. Students easily demonstrated their knowledge of repeating patterns, so we moved on to growing/shrinking patterns. They are exploring how both shape patterns and number patterns grow or shrink sequentially. We are using the strategies of counting on or subtracting to find the gap between numbers (i.e. In the pattern 3,5,7 . . . there is a gap of 2). Knowing the gap helps determine the next numbers in the pattern.

Events
Next week we have two events at the school. The first is a School Council meeting on Tuesday, September 20th at 6:30pm. All parents are welcome and are encouraged to attend. On Thursday, September 22nd, MCS will host an Open House from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. This is a time where students can show you their classroom and some of the things they have been working on. It is also an opportunity to meet your child's teacher(s).

Your child will be working with the Google Education interface, most notably, Google Drive and Google Slides. Some of the students have had prior knowledge of its set-up, while others are learning their way around this format for the first time. Here are some instructions for you so that you can follow your child’s progress and also sites I will send them during the year.

Binder and Forms
The only school supply I wish students to have is a 1" binder. If you are unable to locate one, please let me know as I have some from previous years.
If you still have any of the forms that went home on the first day, please return them as soon as possible.
First Week
We have had a busy first week! We have been reading lots of stories together and participating in a number of "getting to know you" activities. In math we have started a unit on Patterning and in Science we are learning about structures.

Welcome!
Welcome to Grade 3! What a wonderful class we have this year. We currently have 17 students in Room 131, including 3 students that are new to MCS. We also have an Educational Assistant in the room, Mrs. MacDougall.
We spent the day getting to know one another and working together to create classroom expectations. The students came up with some great ideas including, "smile lots, leave your toys at home, and be nice to Mrs. Nolette" (I love this one!!). We decided it was important to be kind to everyone.
A great deal of paperwork can home with your child today. Please take some time to look it over and complete any forms.
