Black and Orange Day

Exploding Pumpkin!

It took 429 elastics (far over most of our estimates) and lots of time, but our pumpkin finally popped!  Watch it in slow motion or speed it up (you can adjust the speed with the gear in the bottom right of the screen).  It is entertaining!  Thank you Mrs. Belleau for the great experiment.

Classroom Update

We Scare Hunger

The character education committee is collecting non-perishable food items for the Deep River Food Bank.  Please send in any items you may have.

Bus Safety
Yesterday we had a brief lesson on bus safety put on by the bus company.  Students were reminded of safe bus behaviour as well as how to get off the bus in an emergency.

Curriculum
Language:
In language, students are working on constructing complete paragraphs. They have been completing a variety of writing activities (i.e. favourite season, haunted house description, creative fairy tale) to work on this skill.  We came up with the goal and success criteria below for students to follow.  We are continuing to participate in the Global Read Aloud. The students are enjoying Fenway and Hattie.

Math
After completing our patterning unit, we have been working on place value using Base 10 materials.  We also continue to work on mental math strategies for adding, subtracting and multiplying on a daily basis.

Science:
Grade threes are learning about structures and grade twos are learning about the properties of matter (solids, liquids, gases, the water cycle)

Social Studies:
We are investigating communities in Ontario (grade 3) and around the world (grade 2).

Our class will begin 45 min swimming lessons next week.  A permission form went home today.  We will be going to the pool every Thursday from October 26th to November 16th.  Please help your child remember his/her swimming gear on those dates.

Bridge Building

After a lesson on the history and engineering behind the Golden Gate Bridge, students applied their new knowledge of supports, trusses, span, etc. to build paper bridges of their own.  They loved the challenge of trying to have their bridge support the most amount of pennies!
