Outdoor Education

With the beautiful weather last week, we spent a great deal of time outdoors.  With KidActive, students participated in a variety of outdoor games and then did some building with snow.  Later in the week, the high school students built quinzees (igloos) so we spent some time enjoying them.

Math

We are starting to investigate adding and subtracting money.  Most students know the money coins and bills and are are able to add simple amounts in their heads.  They are now figuring out how much change they will receive from a given amount and how much more they need to reach an amount.  They are using manipulatives (play money), apps, traditional addition and subtraction, and the strategy of counting on to figure out solutions.  When you are out shopping with your child, it is helpful to have them determine how much an item costs and how much change they will receive.

Kid Active

Tomorrow we will be participating in an outdoor education workshop with Kid Active!  The class will be outside for an hour and half so please be sure they come prepared with snowsuits, boots, hats and mitts!

Valentine's Day Cards

The students have made Valentine mail bags that they can fill with their cards tomorrow.  I forgot to include Mrs. MacDougall on the list.  She is the wonderful Educational Assistant in our class.

Math

We have been spending a great deal of time recently on Operations.  This includes addition (3 digit with regrouping), subtraction (3 digit with regrouping), multiplication (up to 7x7) and division.  Students have been working on a variety of strategies to solve these types of problems.  This includes using mental math (i.e. add the ones, add the tens, add the hundreds), using manipulatives and open number lines, and using traditional algorithms (the way we all learned as kids!).  It is helpful if students can receive additional practice at home.  A car ride is a great place to practice times tables!!

Swimming

Our class has signed up for 4 more weeks of swimming lessons.  We have a number of students in the class who can use the extra practice so we thought it was a good idea to have a few more lessons.  The form went home today and we start next week. Sorry for the short notice.  Please return the form as soon as possible.
