Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! We hope you are having a wonderful holiday.

The week before the holiday was very busy for Room 131.  We performed at the Character Ed assembly, shopped at the Whistle Stop, made crafts and gifts for our family, shopped for ingredients, baked cookies and visited the Long Term Care to share them.  Students built structures to further their understanding of 3D solids.  Kelly and Isla were recognized at the Character Ed assembly.  The grade 2 students also made felt shoes as part of their learning about celebrations around the world.  We finished the week by visiting the Art Show and viewing our artwork and those of other MCS students.  The Art Show runs at the library for another week.

It was a wonderful week, but exhausting.  We hope everyone is enjoying some well-earned rest.  See you in the New Year!

Letters

This week I had students write letters to Santa as well as letters to family members. While in many of the letters to Santa, students asked for "stuff", I asked them to take a different approach in their letters to family members. I asked them to think about things that perhaps don't cost any money, like visiting a special spot, or having some one-on-one time. We watched an Ikea commercial from Spain (the link is below) which helped remind us all that the holiday season is not just about presents. We had a nice discussion about how the holidays are a wonderful opportunity to spend time with those we care about. While most students felt that they have lots of quality time with their parents, many came up with great ideas to have even more! We hope you enjoy the letters!  They will be delivered tomorrow.

Shopping for Family

Our class will have the opportunity to visit The Whistle Stop on Friday afternoon to do a little shopping for loved ones at home.  Children will be able to purchase gifts that cost anywhere from 25 cents and up.  Two to five dollars will be more than enough for them to bring.  We will wrap them in the classroom.  The proceeds from the sales go to the Deep River Hospital Auxiliary.
Thank you for your support.

Balloon Rockets

Today the students investigated forces while constructing and "launching" balloon rockets.  Local scientist, John Wills, lent his expertise to help the students better understand forces and the laws of motion. PEO member and CNL employee, Bob Radenovic, also helped with the experiment. The students greatly enjoyed the activity and were very successful!
